Continua la nostra serie di incontri con i fotografi della settimana. Oggi, Jpeggy incontra Nadia Shira Cohen per un botta e risposta liberamente ispirato al questionario di Proust (la madre di tutte le interviste)
Come racconto il mio progetto.
[IT] Oniontown è un posto speciale, una comunità formata da una famiglia allargata che vive in sette roulotte. E‘ un posto privato, ad un’ora e mezzo da New York ed è un posto stigmatizzato da chi ci vive. Ho lavorato su Oniontown perchè volevo fare un progetto incentrato sui trailer park. Tutti mi avevano descritto in modo negativo quei posti, così ho voluto vedere di persona. All’inizio non ero molto apprezzata, il che è comprensibile, perché è una comunità privata che ha ottenuto nel tempo un sacco di citazioni negative nei giornali locali. Ma quando ho descritto loro quello che volevo fare, il fatto che volevo visitare i loro spazi e documentare la loro vita in immagini, a quel punto loro si sono lentamente aperti nei miei confronti. I luoghi mi hanno da subito affascinata, mi sono sentita come un ospite, venivo trattata con grande ospitalità. Ogni personaggio di Oniontown diventava unico per me, come se lo stessi guardando attraverso la lente della mia macchina fotografica. E‘ sorprendente quanto la tua osservazione delle persone può diventare acuta quando stai per ore di fronte a loro nella tranquilla serenità di un tubo di vetro. Sono rimasta molto sorpresa anche da tutte le cose abbandonate lì attorno: vecchie foto, televisori rotti, conchiglie bucate. Passeggiare intorno ad Oniontown e scoprire questi oggetti è diventato come mettere insieme un puzzle, un puzzle del passato, della vita come è ora. Trovare queste memorie perdute sparse in tutta Oniontown mi ha aiutato a capire di più le persone e la loro storia.
[EN] Oniontown is a special place, a community of one extended family that all live in about 7 trailers. It’s a private spot an hour and 1/2 outside of New york and is a place that is stigmatized by the locals. I came upon oniontown because I wanted to do a project about a trailer park. Everyone in the area had described the place badly, so I wanted to go see it for myself. In the beginning I was not very welcome, which is understandable because it’s a private community who has gotten a lot of bad press in the local newspapers. But when I described to them what I wanted to do, that I wanted to visit them and document their lives in pictures, they slowly opened up to me. I very quickly became fascinated with the place and felt like a guest and was treated with great hospitality when I came. Each character of Oniontown became unique to me as I watched them through the lens of my camera. It’s amazing how acute your observation of people becomes when you stand for hours staring at them in the quiet peacefulness of a tube of glass. I was also very taken by the discarded things that lie all around the land, old pictures, broken T.V.s, bullet shells. Walking around Oniontown and discovering these objects became like putting together a puzzle, a puzzle of the past, of life as it is now. Finding these lost memories all over oniontown helped me to understand more about the people and their history.
Il tratto principale della mia ricerca fotografica
[IT] Più di tutto ho studiato vari stili di fotografia, il lavoro di altri fotografi ma ho anche studiato molto la pittura focalizzandomi in particolare sui pittori del XVIII secolo. Cerco di non rimanere troppo bloccata su uno stile. Prendo una storia che voglio raccontare e rifletto su come potrebbe avere più senso una volta resa in uno stile visivo che abbia anche a che fare con le circostanze date. A volte si ha poco tempo per rendere la storia e così si deve pensare a come si stanno andando a produrre le immagini nello stesso breve lasso di tempo che si ha per lavorare.
[EN] Above all I study other photography, other photographers work but I also study a lot of painting, especially 18th century French painters. I try not to get too stuck into one style. I take a story I want to tell and think about how it makes most sense to tell it in a visual way which also has to do with the circumstances you are given. Sometimes you have a short amount of time to render a story and so you have to think how you are going to produce images that speak to the story in the short amount of time that you have to work.
La qualità che desidero in uno scatto
[IT] Non riesco a spiegare quello che veramente cerco in una foto, perchè è qualcosa che si sa nel momento in cui la prendi e realizzi che hai ottenuto quel momento che è differente da tutti quelli che ci sono stati appena prima e appena dopo, ed è un momento speciale perchè puoi guardare sia la foto che la persona nella foto.
[EN] I can’t really explain what I search for in one foto, because it’s something you just know when you see the photo after you have taken it and you realize you got that moment that is different then the moments that were just before or after it but it’s a special moment and it makes you look twice at the photo and in many cases the person in the photo.
La qualità che preferisco in un’immagine
[IT] Questa domanda è simile a quanto sopra e vorrei rispondere nello stesso modo.
[EN] This question is similar to the above and I would answer it in the same way.
Il mio principale difetto.
[IT] Ho due difetti principali che visti in un certo modo possono essere considerati pregi.
Uno è che mi piace lavorare molto vicino al mio soggetto e tanto intimamente che talvolta mi mancano quelle larghe e ricche immagini che danno più il senso di luogo e di impostazione, quelle immagini che ci insegnano a ricercare alle scuole di giornalismo.
L’ho sempre fatto perchè so che devo ma non è mai uscito fuori una buon lavoro.
Sono anche un po’ lenta nel mio modo di lavorare , ciò mi permette di creare le immagini di cui ho bisogno. Preferisco essere paziente e ascoltare le persone prima di fotografarle.
Ma questo non aiuta quando devi rispettare una scadenza!
[EN] I have two major defaults which if looked at in another way could also be considered assets. One is that I like to work very close to my subjects and intimately so that I lack sometimes those wider images with more information that give you a sense of place and setting, you know that images they always tell you have to take in journalism school. I always do it because I know I have to but it never comes out right. Also I am a bit slow in the way I work, which allows me to create the images I need. I prefer to be patient and listen a lot to people before I even begin to photograph them. But this doesn’t help when you are under a deadline!

[EN] Photography is my preferred job.
Il paese dove vorrei vivere
[IT] Per ora sono molto felice in Italia. Per molto tempo, spostarsi qui è stato il mio sogno e finalmente l’ho realizzato un anno e mezzo fa.
[EN] For now I am very happy in Italy. It was my dream for a long time to move here and I finally realized it one year and one half ago.
Il fotografo che preferisco
[IT] Mi piace molto Maia Roger per il suo uso del colore e il senso di solitudine delle sue immagini. E
c’è anche questo fotografo francese con cui Maia Roger sta lavorando che mi piace molto, fa delle foto artistiche con soggetti che sono metà persone e metà animali.
Un fotografo che mi ha recentemente dato molta ispirazione è Mimmo Jodice, che è interessante perchè è un fotografo del bianco e nero mentre le mie fotografie sono a colori e solitamente sono più attratta dal colore mentre c’è qualcosa del lavoro di Mimmo che è poetico. Può fotografare un oggetto inanimato e dargli vita. E’ anche un buon editor del suo lavoro che è una qualità spesso trascurata ma molto fondamentale.
[EN] I like very much Maia Roger for her use of color and sense of solitude in her images. And also there is this French Photographer who Maia Roger who’s work I like very much, she does these art photos with people made up of half animal. A photographer who has recently given me much inspiration is Mimmo Jodice, which is interesting because he is a black and white photographer and I am color and usually attracted more to color images but there is something about Mimmo’s work that is so poetic. He can photograph an inanimated object and give it life. Also he is an extremely good editor of his work which is often a quality overlooked yet very fundamental.
La tecnica che preferisco
[IT] Come ho detto prima sono molto più incentrata sul colore e solo occasionalmente scatto in bianco e nero quando sento che è più appropriato a ciò che sto immortalando. Mi piace molto fotografare in digitale perchè ti permette di scattare in molte e differenti condizioni di luce senza il treppiede. Odio fotografare con il treppiede (anche se lo uso quando necessario) ma lo trovo fisicamente molto vincolante.
Sto iniziando un nuovo progetto dove fotografo con la mia camera di grandezza media su pellicola e devo dire che usandola mi sento più focalizzata sullo scatto e faccio meno errori. Non sono distratta nel guardare in camera, sono più attenta all’esposizione, fotografo meno ma più accuratamente. E’ un modo differente di scattare e ti permette di essere più concentrato sul soggetto.
[EN] Like I said before I am more of a color photographer and only occasionally shoot black and white when I feel it really fits for what I’m shooting. I like very much shooting digitally because it allows you to shoot in much lower light conditions without a tripod. I hate shooting with a tripod (even though I do when it’s necessary) but I find it very physically constricting. I am starting a new project which I’m photographing with my medium format camera on film and I have to say what I like about shooting with film is I feel more focused about what I’m shooting and I make less mistakes. I’m not distracted by looking in the camera back and I am careful about my exposure and shoot less but more accurately. It’s a different way to shoot and it allows you to be more focused on your subject.

Il museo che più apprezzo
[IT] Ce n’è molti che mi piacciono ma il mio preferito è il Louvre. Potrei perdermici dentro per ore….o per giorni.
[EN] There are many I like but the Louvre is my favorite. I could get lost in there for hours…even days.
La professione che non ho fatto
[IT] Amo molto le scienze, avrei voluto essere uno scienziato o un dottore.
[EN] I really love science, I would have liked to have been a scientist or doctor.
